Here are 20 things that will brighten, refresh and generally improve the look and feel of your home and all for a price that is reasonable for anyone!

  1. Towels. Its a great way to add color to your bathroom or kitchen.
  2. Mats. Whether it is your doormat, bathmat or kitchen mat, they all get worn over time.
  3. Shower Curtains. If you have a small bathroom, go with a light solid color.
  4. Pillows. Need a refresher to your couch? A colorful pillow can do the trick.
  5. Candles.  If I had to pick one thing that is always a winner, it would be this. It works in any decor, takes out odor and can cost so little!
  6. Tablecloths. It can cover up a table in need or replacement, restaining or repainting.
  7. Plants. Any variety can give life to any empty spot in your house.
  8. Rugs/Runners. A couple of nice throw rugs can add color in needed areas.
  9. Bins. They can get everything from toys to clothes under control.
  10. Blankets. It’s the best option when you need to to cover up the stain, the tear or the worn spot on chairs, beds and couches.

  1. Folding your clothes and putting them away
  2. Taking out the trash
  3. Emptying the dirty dishes in the sink
  4. Sweeping/Vacuuming
  5. Wiping down outdoor debris and dirt at your front entrance (a broom is great for this!)

Tackle any of these and it will make you feel better and your house show better.

  1. Linens.  If they’re torn or shredding, time to trash.
  2. Shoes.  Let them go if they are too small, too painful or just too “what was I thinking?”
  3. Tupperware. They will never get organized if you keep throwing them in the cabinet.
  4. Games. As your children grow the games they play change.  This is a great one to pass on to someone else.
  5. Sweaters. Assess the ones you wear versus the ones that your never do.
  6. CD’s and DVD’s. I had a friend give a donation of all her VHS tapes to a non-profit organization. It was a benefit all around!
  7. Jewelry. Classic never goes out of style.  It’s the “today’s fashion” that you have to be honest about.
  8. Coats.  It’s worth going through it at least once a year.
  9. Handbags.  Not your style anymore?  Donate. Sell. Exchange. Give away…and the list goes on.

20 Things That Should NOT be on Your Floors at Your Next Showing

  1. Toys. It doesn’t matter if it belongs to you or your kids.
  2. Carpet Stains. It’s worth it to see if the stains will come out.
  3. Food. Half eaten is that much worse.
  4. Dust Balls. Given enough time dust starts accumulating along your walls.
  5. Animal Poop. For most buyers, there is little recovery from this gross factor here.
  6. Clothing. No one knows if it is clean or dirty. However, everyone assumes it’s dirty.
  7. Drinks. Whether it is a can of soda or coffee from this morning, it never looks good.
  8. Tech Gadgets. Computer, ipods, phones. Accidentally step on one of these and it’s a big loss.
  9. Diapers. Dirty or clean, the floor is no place for them!

20 Things that Should NOT be at your Front Entrance for Showings

Here’s a list of everyday things that distract or concern prospective buyers as they are coming to your front door.

  1. Any newspaper/phone book. If they are wet, it’s even more important that they are gone.
  2. Anything with wheels. This includes skateboards, roller skates/blades, scooters and bikes, etc.
  3. Tree Debris. Leaves, branches, etc.
  4. Old or overwhelming decorations. 2 weeks past the holiday is a good rule thumb to know it must come down.
  5. Dead plants. If it is brown, move it to another location where it can come back or let it go.
  6. Shoes/Clothing. If you keep your shoes near any door, have a bin for them.
  7. Your pet. If your dog is barking and scratching at the front door, this puts everyone on edge coming into your house.
  8. Broken light fixtures. Look at your fixtures. Make sure the bulbs are working, that there is no broken glass and they are not rusting or barely hanging on.
  9. Toys. None of them should be remotely close to this area.
  10. Dirty Glass. When is the last time you cleaned your front door glass? (more…)
